This research project will explore the dynamics between the Latino and African-American communities in the broader Los Angeles region to determine the extent of collaboration in activism during the course of the Civil Rights Movements. A deep exploration of American institutions, such as economics, social class, education, and politics of the day will help provide a clear understanding of the adversities that provide the backdrop to action during this moment in American history. I will demonstrate how both communities were committed to developing parallel courses of activism that where tied to the racial hierarchy that created a clear division between minorities in Los Angeles. This division was both visible in the geography as well as in the cultural development of the city. The question than becomes, did these two activist communities collaborate in the Civil Rights Movement? The answer lies in the institutions created towards distinct forms of oppression for both groups at different points along this historical path. My research will demonstrate how the influence of racial oppression held paradoxical results of both separation and unity between the two communities; thus, the creation of “black” and “brown” shades around the landscape and social life in Los Angeles.
